Chapter 20

Professor Doriah looked out over us with a hint of what I thought was pity as she began the next day’s class. “Now that we’ve covered the fundamentals, we’ll be moving on to another unit. As I stated before, each week will cover a different topic. This week will be Magical Defense. Of course, depending on what school you choose when the month is over, you will be entering years of training during which you will become an expert. But for now, we do require a certain general level of aptitude from our students. Even if you do not plan on facing combat, you can never guarantee that it will not seek you out. Whether as a soldier, or a civilian, you will need to know how to defend yourselves. And if you don’t, then it will look bad on all of us who hail from Aether Academy.

“I know you must all be itching to train or duel, but I encourage you to hold off for just a bit longer. I’ll be teaching you the most basic forms of protection that will be utterly invaluable in the days to come,” she paused and glanced around the room ominously.

Sounded like Whelan was right about combat being a part of the exam, not that it was much of a surprise. I, for one, was pretty psyched. After a week of plain, if still interesting, lectures, we would finally be getting to the actual use of magic, instead of just discussing what it was or how it worked.

And that was running away, according to her. “The only fight you can always win is the one you avoid. Don’t put yourself at unnecessary risk,” she had said in a tired voice. If she’d been teaching here for as long as it seemed, then I was sure she had seen a lot of stupid mistakes and students killed before their time.

But, given that the school was the one putting us all at unnecessary risk, it seemed a bit unfair. It wasn’t like the exam was something we could just run away from. I didn’t have much time to dwell on that though, as she finally got to the good part.

Bidding us all to watch closely, she siphoned a bit of power from Pholl and held a hand out in front of her. She moved it in a circular motion and spoke, “Now, as I create a shield of air, what I’m doing with my hand isn’t strictly necessary. I could stand still and do just the same thing, but perception is of utter importance. This motion feels right to me. It seems like it should help me create the shield, and so it helps my mind form an idea of what I am trying to do. In turn, that improved mental image makes the shield more effective.

“In time, through repetition and training, you
